Heroin Forum

Wednesday evening, the 10th of December, 2015, there was a forum to address the Heroin crisis that Rockingham County is facing. The forum was hosted by Sanborn Regional High School and sponsored in a collaborative effort from several prevention coalitions in our area, including the Raymond Coalition for Youth.

There was a panel of guests from various backgrounds that helped to shed light on the crisis and number of lives lost in the past year due to this drug. There is no doubt that this issue affects everyone in some way or another.

Key note speaker, David Kelly of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area of New England, asked everyone to “Look to your right, left, front and back. At least one of those individuals you are looking at has been touched by this in some way.”

The purpose of the evening was to shed some light on this issue so people will start talking.  Long gone are the days when a heroin user was someone in a back alley shooting up.  Today’s heroin users are functioning youth and adults. Some go to work and school each day until their addiction is out of control and they can no longer function.

Prescription drug misuse is just one of the contributing factors that has led us here. If not taken properly, and used as directed, these medications can become very addictive. They can become hard to stop, and people in turn are turning to the streets to feed their cravings. These people are loved ones, co-workers and neighbors and they need help.

The problem becomes where to go for help. NH is second to last in the United States for availability to substance misuse treatment! If you, or someone you know is in need of services here is a resource guide for you, provided by the State of NH.

Substance abuse prevention could not be more important than now. Raising awareness to the dangers of substance experimentation, starting with alcohol and marijuana, is critical.

We need to reach kids when they are young. Start talking about prevention as early as when children are in elementary and middle school. For parents, these conversations can be tough. There is a very valuable tool kit available at

Use the age appropriate links and open up conversations at a young age. This will help when the conversations get more involved as children grow.

What can people do now to help?

Talk to your State Representative and Senators and tell your stories.  Let them know what issues are important to you, or how you have been affected by substance misuse.  A special thank you to Kathy Hoelzel, State of NH Representative from Raymond for attending the forum to learn more.  She spoke at the event urging people in every district to contact their representative and inform them on topics they may not be familiar with so they can represent their voice in Concord.  A request was made that this information be shared respectfully by phone or email.

If you have medication in your homes keep it stored in a safe location, out of hands it was not prescribed for.  If it is expired or no longer needed dispose of it properly at our permanent prescription drug take box located in the lobby of the Raymond Police Station.

This forum was a start.  The area coalitions are dedicated to working in their communities to keep these conversation moving forward. To help make a difference today, forward this awareness piece onto others.  Starting the conversation and raising peoples’ levels of awareness is the first step to making a difference!

A Town Hall Talk on Healthy Teen Choices was held on May 7th in partnership with Raymond High School and the Raymond Coalition for Youth. The event was very well attended and had several speakers. This included statistics from our 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, Strategies currently in place and discussion around next steps and where to learn more. This presentation was followed by a school wide presentation by Matt Clarke. Matt joined us to share his story of how one choice continues to have a lifelong impact to not only him, but an extended circle of loved ones and community members. His story was powerful and was well received. You may view it here.

RCFY recognizes and appreciates that our supporters and community members have very busy schedules and are concerned even if they are not able to attend all of our meetings and events. For that reason we try to tape and make available many of our presentations for everyone to view. They are available on our Raymond Coalition Youtube account.

RCFY Raises awareness at a National level

On October 30th, 2013, the Raymond Coalition for Youth held a press conference to release a story that started in Raymond, NH, but had an impact across the country.

Celeste Clark, RCFY’s Executive Director, contacted about concerns regarding the availability of prescription drug bottles filled with candy and mints that were for sale on the Branders internet shopping site. This was an opportunity to raise awareness for an important cause.

Prescription drug abuse is an epidemic in the United States and the leading cause of harm among New Hampshire adults, resulting in more deaths each year than those caused by car crashes. Each day more than 2,000 teens begin abusing prescription drugs. This information needed to be shared so that Branders was aware of the mixed message that candy in a bottle could be sending to young people.

This effort took time, but Jerry McLaughlin, the CEO at Branders, contacted Celeste and, after discussing the issue, he announced that he agreed with the importance of the message and that he would voluntarily remove the pill bottles from his website.

Jerry McLaughlin then sent an email to a half a million of his customers and the response was overwhelming! They commended Jerry for putting people first and choosing to be proactive addressing such a serious matter. This effort continued to spread the awareness and engage people in many different locations about a serious issue that affects us all.

At our press conference the story was covered and published in the NH Union Leader,, and picked up by the Associated Press. This allowed the story to spread across the United States being published in papers not only on the Seacoast, but as far west as California, south to Florida and in many locations in between. What are the messages of this story?
Speak up for something that is important to you. One person can make a difference!
It does not matter how big the mountain is, you can succeed and get to the top – in this case, Branders, a world wide company and its CEO, who we are sure is very busy, took the time to investigate the concern and respond. Raymond may be a small NH community, but our story is traveling to places we never imagined!
People don’t know what they don’t know. Some people thought the idea of candy in a pill bottle was not a big deal until they learned more about Prescription Drug Abuse and the impacts it is having on lives, families and communities across the United States. Some people thought, how insensitive and ridiculous the notion of making light of this issue was, with candy in a bottle and the message that was sending. The point is that we used this opportunity to raise awareness on an issue that many are not even aware of and now they know!

RCFY and the Raymond Police Department are teaming up with Walgreens in Raymond to participate in the 2nd Got Drugs National DEA Prescription Drug Take Back event.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high–more Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin combined, according to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

Please help to make this event a successful one and help spread the word to others to keep our streets safe and medicine out of the hands of those it does not belong to.
If you have expired, un-needed or unused prescriptions in your home please bring them to our event to dispose of them safely.
